Here is some background on the Vision Zero Proposal: fox59.com/indiana-news/m…

The proposal focuses on increasing safe, healthy and equitable mobility for Indianapolis residents, and helps build on existing efforts to address the pedestrian safety issues in the city.
A 15-member task force is expected to be established to oversee the development and implementation of a “Vision Zero” action plan. fox59.com/indianapolitic…

Indianapolis is not the first city to introduce Vision Zero. The initiative was launched in Columbus, Ohio in 2021 and updated in 2023. The 25 mph speed limit established in the downtown area cut their fatality number in half, according to their annual report.
Hoboken, another city that implemented infrastructure changes, has been free from traffic-related deaths since 2017 and seen injuries decline by 62%. indianapolisrecorder.com/indianapolis-a…

We have to understand this initiative will involve several different teams across the city so we have to be patient with this process. 2035 is the goal year to get to zero vehicular fatalities.
The budget will be a critical part of this initiative as we all know this kind of change costs money!
40k people die every year from car crashes. We are so used to crashes being a regular thing and think about reducing that number. Humans aren't perfect, but we can do better!
These trends lend themselves to greater danger of crashes and fatalities. The transformed street is much safer albeit slower traffic.
This must be a cultural change so that it sticks and becomes a daily thought for all of us. Smoking changes went through this as highlighted in her example.
DPW is already making strides to change the things they can change to reduce crashes. They will be a huge player in Vision Zero.
Affecting speed is will be a major part of the plan. This may include changing the legal speed that we all once thought was safe into a safety l safer number.
The next meeting will be in Dec. where Burgess & Niple will present on the 1st set of deliverables. Many thanks to Maria Cantrell for presenting today.
